alright guys...the saga continues...

after closer examination I seem to be dropping some oil...it looks like its along the back portion of the oil pan...and a few drops along the side...do you think this could be the rear main seal? If so is that something that is easy to replace on a 383 just by dropping the oil pan...or am I looking at a complete rebuild on the engine...the guy who owned it before me said it was a recent rebuild...but I'm starting to doubt his credibility to boot.

Sounds like it's the rear main. It can be done while in the car, messy but can be done.

If the car has been sitting and not drove a lot it can develop oil leaks, my car was doing the same and I started driving more and it seems to all most quick leaking now.You may can do some tighten and possible take care of most of them if its been rebuilt lately. Most of these muscle cars sit more that drove and that's what makes them leak.

Check the oil pressure sending unit behind the intake manifold before condeming the rear main seal.

If the sending unit (or manual pressure gage line) is leaking it will leak in the exact same place the rear main does.

does it leak while running or after the car is shut off?

also check the valley pan under the intake for loose bolts or cracks.
