I am trying to remove the fan and the shroud on my 1976, and the Haynes manual just says to loose the 4 bolts on the water pump and things come right off. Well, I feel like an idiot. When I try to rotate those bolts to loosen them, then tire fan and clutch assembly turns right with me. I haven't found a way to hold the assembly well turning the bolts.
i know on newer dodge trucks there is a special wrench to hold the assembly in place, but am I missing something here? I feel like a total idiot.

put the closed end of the wrench on the bolt and give it quick hit with a hammer on the open end it should break it free before everything turns. It helps to have the belts still on too.

Agree with this. Pushing down on the belt helps a lot to keep it from spinning.

I wedge a flat blade screw driver between a bolt head and the pump shaft. Hold it while breaking loose 1 bolt, then rotate the pump 90 degrees and do the next one until they are all loose.
