Hello MrCoronet,

If you can provide us with a clean sharp picture of your 1966 Coronet 500 convertibles fender tag that is located on the top of the inner fender panel in the engine compartment up by where the battery is located, we can provide you with the month, day and year your car was built. Unfortunately, the build date is not included as part of the cars V.I.N. number, but below is how your Coronets V.I.N. number decodes.

WP27E67265374

W = car line, W = Dodge Coronet
P = price class, P = premium price class (Coronet 500 2 door hardtop, convertible and 4 door sedan models)
27 = body style, 27 = convertible
E = engine type, E = 318 cubic inch Poly V-8
6 = vehicle model year, 6 = 1966
7 = vehicles assembly plant location, 7 = St. Louis MO
265374 = vehicles assembly plant sequence number (different from the build date codes)

To answer your original question, your Coronets production date according to your fender tag was Tuesday, April 26 1966. Production runs of the 1966 models should have started on August 1st 1965 and most likely concluded around the second week of August 1966, so I would say that your convertible is considered a later production run car. With that being said, I'd suggest ordering the "G" jack instructions decal.

It's getting late here tonight, but in the next day or so I'll decode the rest of your cars fender tag ok?

Thank you Andy. I've always found researching information in the Factory Parts Books, Factory Service Manuals and other sources for our old cars a lot of fun and helping out friends here on the DCR find out information regarding their cars is also a lot of fun!

Follow up question

you mentioned:

N = Exterior Stripes, Your Coronet Did Not Come With Any Options Here...

What kind of stripes were available for the 66s?

Have seen some thin strips at the top of the body.... but - the look kind of owner installed

Couldn't find anything in the optionlist either...

Best Regards

Hello Anders,

You are very welcome!

Regarding the exterior stripes, there was a factory stripe option for the 1966, 1967 and 1968 models that used the same factory option codes for all three model years and some that were only used on specific 1966, 1967 and 1968 models, but since your Cornet is a 1966, I will concentrate on the stripe options that were available for 1966 unless they were also available under the same factory option codes for the 1967 and 1968 model years as well.

Model Years Used***Description********************Stripe Color***3 Digit Factory Option Code

1966, 1967, 1968****Horizontal Sport Stripes******Black**********311
1966, 1967, 1968****Horizontal Stripes************Delete**********318
1966, 1967, 1968****Horizontal Accent Stripes****Black**********31B
1966, 1967, 1968****Horizontal Accent Stripes****Blue***********31C
1966******************Horizontal Accent Stripes****Dark Blue*****31E
1966, 1967, 1968****Horizontal Accent Stripes****Red************31H
1966******************Horizontal Accent Stripes****Cream*********31S
1966, 1967, 1968****Horizontal Accent Stripes****White**********31W

A note regarding the 3 digit option codes shown above. Due to space limitations on the fender tags, Chrysler only used the last digit of the 3 digit option code, so this means that if your Coronet would have been originally optioned with these stripes, one of the last of three number or letter digits would have been stamped on your cars fender tag on line 1 under the "N" on the term PAINT located on line 2. That space was blank on your fender tag, so this option did not come on your car.

I'm not an expert on these factory stripes, because I've never had them on any of my three 1966 and 1967 Coronets that I've owned over the years, so I'm not positive what the difference is between the "Horizontal Sport Stripes" and the "Horizontal Accent Stripes" are, as the only exterior factory stripes that I've seen on the 1966 and 1967 Coronets are like the horizontal Black pin stripes shown on the 1967 R/T below. I'm fairly sure that these style stripes are the "Horizontal Accent Stripes", but if any of our other members knows differently, I'm sure that they will clarify this for us. Wink

Richard
