1965 Coronet 4 speed lubrication confusion
#1
When I first purchased my Coronet, the shop that I used to flush and replace all fluids put Dextron 3 into the gearbox saying that was the required lubricant after research. I am planning on taking the car on a fairly long trip soon and am uptight that it doesn't have 90w gear oil. Should I be? Thank you!

Yes you should be uptight. It should have GL4 gear oil in it. Plan on ordering it online I wasn’t never able to find it locally.

The shop was right. Automatic tranny fluid is correct – see the pic below from the 65 factory service manual.

Growing up, we had a 65 Belvedere 6 cyl 3 speed on the column. My dad put gear oil in it and couldn’t shift it. Had to put ATF in it.

I always found it to be a confusing topic. For 69, they show either ATF or multipurpose gear oil - see below. I talked to Jamie Passon and he said to use ATF.

I tried it once, it kept trying to shift by itself. That just took all the fun out of it for me. HAHA!!

ATF in an 833 4-speed will eat the countershaft. Always go with gear oil.

I worked for Mopar dealers from '68-'72... Type A/B/Dexron was the factory fill.
