Can anyone tell me why the driver side rear deck speaker hole is smaller than the passenger side? What size speaker am I supposed to use?
My car came with only a dash speaker. Iâm trying to add back speakers. The metal deck has the passenger side speaker oval turned so the defroster would fit. The 6x9 speaker fits that side. But the driver side is smaller.

5x7 fit last time I did one on a 70 if that's the year were talking about, then I made plate to adapt 6x9 down to matching 5x7 under stock looking cover.

So one hole is 6x9 and the other is 5x7? Did they originally come with 2 different speakers? Would it be crazy to put a 6 x 9 on the passenger side and a 5 x 7 on the driver side?

I know this was originally posted along time ago, but it doesn’t look like it was ever positively resolved. My first question would be what year car are you inquiring about? My car is a 1968 and it has the rear holes arranged with one vertical and one horizontal. According to the Accessories list, an am radio or an am 8 track radio was available. A rear speaker was also available for the am radio. If you ordered the eight track, the stereo speakers were put in the front dashboard. So there was no radio available that included two speakers in the rear deck. One of the holes was never intended for a speaker. It is there for the rear defogger. One end of the defogger connects to that hole, and the other end connects to a wide slot shaped hole in the middle rear of the deck. In this manner, the defroster brought the warmer cabin air to blow on the rear window instead of the cold trunk air.
